Where To Go From Here

I'm at a cross roads. I have been for a few weeks. Ever since I took the GACE I have been looking forward to this spring. This was supposed to be the spring that I found a teaching job for next year. Although, at this moment it doesn't look good. I've had a couple of people tell me that it would be best to go back and get my teaching degree. After all, in this economy no one has any jobs right now and most places are looking to cut back. A few of the local school systems are even laying off teachers as well as members of their admin staff. So now, not only am I competing against newly certified teachers (straight out of school) but I'm also competing with experienced teachers who have been laid off due to financial restraints on the school systems. I thought that I'd have a slight competitive advantage over my competition because I would work cheaper since I'm not officially certified yet. Although, as my grandmother said to me, so is everyone else out there- they are willing to cut back what they were earning just to get a job. At least I still have my day job. I've just really started wondering if this is the timing that God wanted or have I rushed into something. Does He want me to go back to school to get another degree that I don't know if we can afford (not to mention a degree in something I'm not 100% sure I'm going to enjoy). Lots of unanswered questions. I can only be still and continue to do the work that He has assigned me while I wait.

  1. My question to that is this, are the people in your area with the degree that you would obtain doing that much better than you with that degree? If so, it might be something to consider, but you still may have to wait if you don't have the finances to do it right now. Ask God to give you wisdom regarding this situation. Sometimes the answer is there, we are just missing it. Ask Him to clear your heart and mind of your own wants so you can see what you NEED to do.

  2. You have a bachelor's degree, right? Have you considered teaching as an adjunt professor at a technical college? You don't have to be a state certified teacher to do this. Also, maybe you could check into teaching online. Just a couple of options to check in to. :)

  3. Jennifer- Thanks for the advice. It's always good to get an unbiased opinion from another Christian lady's persepective. From the research that I've done, the people with the degrees don't start off much better than I would. The only difference is that they have a certification when they graduate. The certification is what will get me in. Have we met before? How'd you find my blog? If you're ever in the area, you should pop in for our Busy Women's Bible Study (last Thursday of every month) at my church (www.galilee.org). We just started Beth Moore's A Woman's Heart (we're taking it slow- one week a month for the busy ladies) and we'd love to see you! Also, I read the first chapter of your new book and I'm hooked! I can't wait till it comes out and I finish it!

Dana- Yep, I've got my bachelor's in business. I never thought of teaching at a tech school. I checked out the sites for our local schools and it's just my luck that they aren't looking for someone like me. Strangely, lots of the positions called for a masters degree and the ones I am qualified for are for campuses that are too far or during times I wouldn't be able to make it to class. Thanks for the info!
